Glossary
This people counting glossary gives plain definitions of the terms in counting projects — from the counting line definition and the occupancy definition to the ACAP definition, DLPU and the edge processing definition.
The basics are explained in people counting: how it works, the path of a count in how Vicodis works.
Counting
- Counting line
- A virtual line drawn into the camera image. Every person or vehicle that crosses it is counted, together with the direction of the crossing.
- Bidirectional counting
- Counting in both directions at the same spot, so entries and exits are known separately.
- Occupancy
- The number of people (or vehicles) inside at a given moment: all entries minus all exits.
- Capacity
- The maximum occupancy allowed or wanted, usually from the building permit, fire safety or a licence.
- Footfall
- The number of people entering a site over a period, without regard to how long they stay.
- Business day
- The day used for statistics. It can start at a time other than midnight, so that a night is counted as one day.
- Zero reset
- Setting the occupancy back to zero once a day, to remove small counting differences that build up. Entries and exits are not changed.
Technology
- ACAP
- AXIS Camera Application Platform — the format for apps that are installed on and run inside Axis cameras. Vicodis is an ACAP application.
- AXIS Object Analytics (AOA)
- The analytics built into Axis cameras that detect and classify people and vehicles and count line crossings.
- DLPU
- Deep learning processing unit — the chip section that runs AI models inside the camera. Vicodis needs a camera with one.
- ARTPEC-9, ARTPEC-8, CV25
- Camera chip platforms with a DLPU on which Vicodis runs. ARTPEC-9 is the newest Axis generation.
- Edge processing
- Analysing data where it is captured — in the camera — instead of sending it to a server or a cloud.
- Live endpoint
- An address on the camera that returns the current figures, as JSON or as plain text, for signage and other systems.
Vicodis
- Master and satellite
- In Vicodis Zone, the master camera collects the counts of its satellite cameras and combines them into one site figure.
- Zone
- A named area of a site, such as a hall or a floor, with its own figure and capacity.
- Sensor Master Key
- A signed, one-time key for one camera that deletes its counting data. Licence and configuration stay.
- Trial licence
- A licence key with an end date, normally 30 days, for testing Vicodis on your own camera.
- Vicodis Care
- Paid support for a year, including new software versions on request; included in the first year, never renewed automatically. Security updates are free for every licence.
