Frequently asked questions

This people counting FAQ collects the common questions people counters raise in almost every project — people counting questions and answers on licensing, installation, data protection and running offline.

The basics are explained in people counting: how it works, the legal side in people counting and the GDPR, all figures on prices for Vicodis and mounting in installing and aiming the camera.

Licensing

Licensing and costs

01

How long does a Vicodis licence last?

A purchased licence lasts indefinitely. It is bound to one camera, has no expiry date and needs no renewal or online activation. Only the trial licence runs for a limited time, normally 30 days. Security updates are free; support and new versions come with Vicodis Care, an optional service that never renews by itself.

02

Are there costs per user or per report?

No. Any number of people can open the dashboard with their camera accounts, and reports and exports are unlimited. The licence is paid once per camera; the only optional recurring item is Vicodis Care for support. All figures are listed on the pricing page.

Installation

Cameras and installation

03

Can Vicodis run on a camera that already records video?

Yes. Vicodis runs alongside the camera’s normal video functions, so a camera that already records for security can count at the same time, provided it supports AXIS Object Analytics. Whether its mounting position also suits counting is the real question; a view from above onto the door works best.

04

Does Vicodis work in poor light?

It works in normal indoor lighting and, with infrared cameras such as the Outdoor PRO kit, also in the dark. Strong backlight from a glass door or sunlight falling directly into the lens makes detection harder. Mounting position and wide dynamic range help, and a test walk shows quickly whether the view works.

05

Do you help with the first installation?

Yes, if it is needed. Many customers set up Vicodis themselves with the installation guide, because the steps are short: install the app, draw the counting lines, enter the capacity. Where a site is unusual or time is short, we help with camera position, counting lines and the first test walk.

Data protection

Data protection

06

Do visitors have to be informed about the counting?

A short notice at the entrance is good practice, even though no images or identities are stored. It states that a camera counts visitors anonymously and names a contact. Whether a notice is legally required at your site, and in which form, is decided by your data protection officer.

07

Can the counting data be traced back to a person?

No. Vicodis stores only counts per line and time interval, plus the current number of people inside. There are no images, no identifiers and no tracks in the database, so there is nothing that could link a figure to an individual, even for someone with full access to the camera.

Offline

Running without cloud

08

What happens if the camera network has no internet at all?

Nothing changes. Vicodis was built for closed networks: the dashboard, fonts and licence check all live on the camera, and time comes from a local NTP server. You open the dashboard in a browser inside the network and install updates by uploading a package on the camera.

09

Where is the counting data stored?

On the camera itself, in a database on the SD card or, without a card, in the internal flash memory. The data survives restarts and power cuts. It is not copied anywhere else unless you set up exports, email reports or a push to a server you choose yourself.

Reports

Reports and figures

10

Can several entrances be combined in one report?

Yes, with Vicodis Zone. A master camera collects the counts of its satellite cameras, and its reports, calendar and exports cover the whole site. Each camera still keeps its own figures, so you can report the building total and every single entrance from the same installation.

11

Can figures be corrected afterwards?

The current number of people inside can be set to a fixed value at any time, for example after a test walk. Counted entries and exits cannot be edited, which keeps them trustworthy for reports and funding applications. Deleting counts requires a one-time key that we issue on request.

How many visitors does your entrance really have?

Tell us your camera model or your project — we check compatibility and come back with a concrete proposal.
