Replacing discontinued Cognimatics people counters

Counters that are still running but no longer supported. A Cognimatics people counter replacement that answers in the same data formats, so existing reporting can stay in place.

  • Compatible data pickup: CSV, JSON, XML and .cnt
  • Runs on the camera, no server
  • Often on the same camera position

The situation

Discontinued counters still in the field

Many sites still count with a Cognimatics TrueView people counter or one of its direct successors. The apps keep running, but they are no longer developed, and the cameras they run on are getting old.

A discontinued people counter is a quiet risk: as long as it works, nobody looks at it — until a firmware update, a camera failure or a new reporting requirement forces a change at short notice. Replacing it on your own schedule is easier.

Compatibility

The compatible data pickup interface

Vicodis answers in the data formats of the classic people counter apps: CSV, JSON, XML with DTD and the .cnt format, built byte for byte against exports from real devices, in five-minute intervals.

One thing cannot stay the same: the address. Axis apps run under their own path, so the interface sits under /local/vicodis/ instead of the old path. All interfaces are described on people counting API, exports and reports.

Reporting

Keeping your existing reporting

Reporting that fetches its data from the camera is designed to keep working once the address is updated. Your history stays in that reporting; Vicodis adds new figures from the day it is installed.

Looking for an AXIS Store Data Manager replacement? Vicodis cannot feed an existing Store Data Manager, which uses its own protected protocol. It takes over that role differently: reports on the camera, several entrances combined on a master camera, CSV and email reports, and a push to servers you run yourself.

  • Pull-based reporting: keeps working with the new address.
  • Store Data Manager: not supported as a target.
  • Instead: camera reports, exports, email and push.
Hardware

Replacing the app, keeping the camera

Where the camera has a deep-learning processing unit and runs AXIS Object Analytics — ARTPEC-9, ARTPEC-8 or CV25 — only the app changes. Many discontinued counters run on older cameras without such a unit; those are replaced, while the mounting position usually stays.

The successor app is the Vicodis Visitor Counter. If you are moving from the later AXIS People Counter, see replacing AXIS People Counter before support ends.

FAQ

Questions about replacing old counters

01

Can Vicodis deliver data in the old Cognimatics formats?

Yes. Vicodis has a data pickup interface that returns counts as CSV, JSON, XML with DTD and the .cnt format of the classic counters, built byte for byte against exports from real devices. The only change for your reporting tool is the address, because Axis apps run under their own path.

02

Does Vicodis work with AXIS Store Data Manager?

Not as a data source for an existing installation. AXIS Store Data Manager expects its own protected protocol, which Vicodis cannot imitate. Instead, Vicodis keeps reports on the camera, combines several entrances on a master camera and can push figures or send email reports to systems you run yourself.

03

Do I need new cameras to replace a Cognimatics counter?

Only if the existing camera is too old. Vicodis needs an Axis camera with a deep-learning processing unit and AXIS Object Analytics, which means the ARTPEC-9, ARTPEC-8 or CV25 platforms. Many discontinued counters run on older cameras without such a unit; those are replaced, while the mounting position usually stays.
